The Benefits of Infant Massage
Infant massage is a form of parent-child bonding that is becoming more popular within parental circles throughout the country. In fact, in some areas private classes are being offered focusing specifically on the subject, offering parents the chance to learn the techniques and understand the benefits of massaging their little ones. Research has shown that massaging your infant can assist growth and development, improve circulation and digestion, relieve teething pain and strengthen the emotional connection between the infant and his masseuse (mom/dad).
Preparation is the key to achieving any goal, and giving your infant an effective massage is no different. Make sure you are relaxed and have enough time to give your baby your complete attention for the length of the massage. Becoming distracted or rushing through it can spoil the experience and the effectiveness of what you are trying to accomplish. Playing some calm music in the background and shutting your phone off can help keep the outside world from interfering during this special moment you are sharing with your child.
When beginning the massage, place your baby on a very comfortable, flat surface, such as a bed or your lap. You can place a towel underneath them as well to enhance the comfort. If you want to use massaging oil, natural oils such as vegetable or olive are good choices since they are not harmful to your baby if he decides to stick his fingers in his mouth, but do not rub any oil on the baby’s head or face.
Your baby’s mood will mostly dictate how the massage will go, so be ready to give your baby the attention he wants. If you are massaging the baby’s chest and she wants to turn over, follow her lead. Turn her over and massage her back. Speaking and singing to your baby during this special moment can also help soothe and calm him so you can continue the massage. However, if fidgeting continues, note your baby’s limit and end the massage. Perhaps next time you will be able to lengthen the session.
As your infant gets older, you may find that he starts to dictate the pace and parts of the massage he likes. This shows that your baby is not only receptive to the massage, but particular to certain parts of it. Focus on those parts he likes and less time on the ones he finds uncomfortable. Communication is vital, and you will discover just how much more the two of you share with one another through these sessions.
As always, be very careful and gentle while massaging your little one. Consult a professional if you are unsure of how to proceed. For those who want to learn different techniques, classes are available in some areas. Learning with others can create a more comfortable environment where interaction and observation can assist you with learning new techniques to help make this experience even more special between you and your child.
