Shopping may be drudgery to you, but to a child it's an exciting place filled with things to see, smell, touch, and taste.

Description:
For adults, the word supermarket conjures up images of long lines, squeaky carts, and high prices. But for young children, food shopping is filled with exciting new sights, sounds, smells, and tastes. So, instead of facing this necessary chore with drudgery, find opportunities to make the outing a learning experience for your little one.

Step by Step:
  1. Count items as you put them in the cart.
  2. Name items as you put them in the cart.
  3. Point out the shapes, textures, and colors of fruits and vegetables in the produce department.
  4. Let your child select one new fruit or vegetable to try on each shopping trip.
  5. Encourage your child to assist in simple ways by asking him or her to "hold the bread" or "put the apples in the bag."
