Wee Workout - Nov 11th, 2007
Everyone loves a good workout, and babies are no exception!
Description:
Even before they have control of their movements, babies enjoy exercising their arms and legs. Guiding their movements helps babies develop muscle coordination and allows them to become acquainted with the parts of their body. Head turns, leg lifts, stretches, and kicks are all necessary for proper muscle development. A daily exercise routine will be both stimulating and entertaining for your little one. Before long, he or she will be rolling, kneeling, and crawling independently.
Step by Step:
Materials:
Changing table
flat padded surface
thick towel or blanket

Guiding their movements helps babies develop muscle coordination and allows them to become acquainted with the parts of their body. Head turns, leg lifts, stretches, and kicks are all necessary for proper muscle development. A daily exercise routine will be both stimulating and entertaining for your little one. Before long, he or she will be rolling, kneeling, and crawling independently.
Step by Step:
- Lay baby on his or her back on a soft mat, blanket, or bed.
- Place your thumbs in your baby's fist. He or she will grasp your fingers. (This is one of the thirteen natural reflexes of newborns).
- Wrap your fingers around the baby's to be sure you have a secure grip.
- Now say your baby, "Hang on! Up we go! Up, up, up!" and gently pull his or her arms up toward you. The baby's head should lean toward you. (If your baby is unable to hold up his or her head, wait until he or she has better head control before trying this exercise).
- Now gently place your baby back down, saying "Down we go! Down, down, down!"
- Do this procedure several times. As your baby gets stronger, you can pull him or her up higher (remember to pull gently, though). Make this a daily exercise routine.
