Serve children a dose of daily vitamins...after coating it in caramel and candy!

Description:
Remember the old saying "An apple a day keeps the doctor away"? Today we know that apples really do deserve their reputation as symbols of good health. They contain almost no fat or sodium, are rich in dietary fiber, filled with vital nutrients, and contain oodles of vitamins. Apples are also the star ingredient in a variety of delicious treats: homemade applesauce, baked apples, apple pie, apple crumbles, and caramel-coated apples, to name a few.

Why not have an apple tasting? Choose a few from the following list: Cortland, Delicious, Fuji, Gala, Granny Smith, Jonathan, Macintosh, Red, Rome Beauty, Stayman, Wealthy, Braeburn. Which are sweet? Which are tart? Your child will no doubt have a favorite, or two!

Now let's get started on those Caramel-Coated Apples.

Step by Step:

  1. Melt butter in a saucepan.
  2. Add light brown sugar and water. Stir until the mixture has a smooth consistency. Bring to a gentle boil, then cover and simmer for 3 minutes, or until the mixture is thin, but somewhat sticky.
  3. Remove from heat.
  4. Pierce the centers of the apples and insert craft sticks, and then swirl the apples in the syrup until coated.
  5. Place apples on a greased cookie sheet to harden. Refrigerate for 1 to 2 hours.
  6. Optional: decorate with small pieces of dried fruit and candy before refrigeration.

Materials:
1 1/2 tbsp. butter
1 1/2 cups light brown sugar
6 tbsp. water
8-10 apples (Macintosh, Granny Smith, or Red Delicious work well)
Dried fruit and candy (optional)
Craft sticks
