The key to keeping little ones warm is layers, layers, and more layers!

Description:
When it comes to staying warm in the winter cold, dressing in layers is the way to go. For one thing, precious heat is trapped between each layer of clothing; for another, it's easy to adjust kid's clothing as they move between the house, the car, the grocery store, and the outdoors;all of which are different temperatures. Being able to simply remove or add a layer or two as you go will make your life easier, and make your child more comfortable.

Step by Step:
  1. For a first layer of clothing, dress your child in long-sleeved cotton. T-shirts or thermal knit shirts with long sleeves. You can use thermal pants, long underwear, or tights to go under pants jeans, or trousers. If you don't have long underwear, use an extra pair of pants or pajamas. Be sure the fit is not too tight.
  2. For the second layer, choose daytime clothes in warm fabrics such as fleece, flannel, or corduroy. Turtlenecks or other high-necked shirts are a good choice as are pants with elastic or fitted waists. Pants with straight legs will keep kids warmer, but be sure they are wide enough to fit over long underwear.
  3. Put heavy socks on your child, then add shoes or snow boots, depending on your destination. Make sure soles have a rubber tread to prevent slipping on snow and ice.
  4. Add jackets or snowsuits that are fully waterproof and fleeced lined. Look for thick, puffy fabric, such as quilted fiberfill, linings with fake fur or flannel, and hoods to cover the head. The best design is overlapping fabric with zippers or snaps to keep the wind out, and be sure that there is enough length to cover the torso or seat, not just the waist. There should also be rib-knit cuffs inside sleeves to keep out drafts.
