The gift of gab...it's a learned behavior!
Description:
Letting your child talk on the phone, whether it's a toy one or the real thing is a good way to introduce him or her to both language and social skills. Purchase a toy one and see the delight on your child's face when you make it ring and announce, "It's for you!" And be sure to call him or her to the phone to talk to loved ones; whether your toddler talks non-stop or simply breathes into the receiver, the caller will most likely be enchanted!
Step by Step:
- Using a cordless toy telephone, sit with your baby on your lap or beside you and hold the phone to your ear as you talk.
- Pretend the phone is ringing and answer it. Say "Hello. Oh, you'd like to talk to (baby's name). Just a minute, please. Here he/she is."
- Hold the phone to the baby's ear.
- After you have done this a few times, pretend to have a longer conversation of two or three sentences. Use the baby's name in the conversation and other words that he understands, such as Daddy, dinner, and bye-bye.
- Put the phone to the baby's ear and see whether he or she will talk into it.
- Praise your child by saying, "Good talking!" When you're finished, be sure to say "good-bye" and hang up the phone.
